Pilang Women and Enthusiastic of HKm

Approximately 15 Pilang Village’s people, District City of Jambiren Raya, Pulang Pisau, Central Kalimantan, attended a village meeting about HKM (Community Forest, one of the government’s model of social forestry), held by the Indonesia’s Cakrawala Foundation in Pilang Town Hall office (15/3). Of 15 people who attended, there were 4 women.

“The data and information collecting for the preparation HKM (Community Forest, red) was conducted by women. Thanks to all women for their efforts to spread and collect forms,“said Dedi from YCI in his opening speech during Pilang’s village meeting.

Pilang Village is one of the villages prepared for HKM management rights in the former peat swamp area PLG (Peatlands Project a million hectares). The whole process is conducted by village people.

The village that crossed by Kahayan river is very familiar with the peat swamp fires during the dry season arrives. From the explanation of local communities, peat swamp areas alongside Kahayan River, including this village is flammable since the peat swamps clearing for PLG (1995). Even so, there are still some areas that diversed from the fire area, since the community planted rubber and fruit trees with handil methods.

“People have agreed to submit for HKM, because the people felt they haven’t any public and legal recognition for their natural resources management system and their production area management,” said Dedi, explained about the socialization and acceptance of social forestry program in Pilang Village.

Currently, there are 3 groups and united into one big group who will propose for “peat swamp HKM”. They are; Handil Batu group Stone with 31 members, 15 members of Gantalang Group, and Tamua River by 20 people. The area that were identified to get HKM permission from these groups is approximately 1140 hectares.

“This numbers of people in each group will probably increase in the future. An HKM method is similar to that carried out through generations (handil, red). And if so, the area soon will be expanded,” explained Jamal (41 years), chairman of the big group of several groups of HKM candidates in Pilang village.

As the HKM meeting was held, in the wards of Pilang village is now on their rice harvesting season. That’s why, this meeting is only attended by group representatives.

Although this meeting was only attended with few of representative, some in attendance was the women groups who had received appreciation from the organizer of the meeting, since they listened enthusiastically and follow the contents of the meeting. And after the meeting ended, these women were enthusiastic too, side by side cleaning the Pilang Town Hall without any command.
